- Nappy terminology explained!
What are all of these things?
What about all of the different nappy types?
A FLAT (or prefold) nappy is the traditional nappy that has been available for over 40 years. These nappies are generally the cheapest option, but also the most complicated as the nappy must be folded into an appropriate shape for use before being pinned or nippa'd. Prefold nappies have extra layers of fabric in the centre, which makes them more absorbent where it is needed. They require the use of a wrap over the top of the nappy.
SHAPED nappies have a similar shape as disposables and generally have elastic at the leg and waist openings to minimise the chance of leaks. They require the use of a wrap over the top of the nappy.
An ALL IN ONE nappy is most similar to a disposable as the nappy and wrap are combined together to form one piece. Although these are the most convenient to use they do take a long time to dry due to the thickness of the one-piece, and even when using a tumble dryer they may require extra time to dry fully afterwards.
Your individual circumstances, such as drying facilities, available funds, etc will dictate which type of nappy is most appropriate for you. To help you further in your decision we've rated all of the nappies on this site, on the individual nappy pages, for absorbency, drying time, compactness and ease of use.
